Carlsberg supports the Red Cross response for communities affected by the earthquake in Myanmar
A powerful earthquake of 7.7 magnitude struck Myanmar on 28 March, which has caused immense destruction in the country and as of 3 April, the official death toll in the country has surpassed 3,000.
The situation in Myanmar is critical. Reports indicate widespread destruction and a rising number of dead, injured, and hundreds of missing persons. Hospitals in the affected areas are struggling to cope with the influx of people in need of medical assistance. Buildings have collapsed, bridges have crumbled, roads have been destroyed, and the power grid has been severely impacted.
A Disaster on Top of Existing Troubles
For years, Myanmar has been plagued by political instability, economic decline, civil war, and vast humanitarian needs. This devastating earthquake has dealt another blow to the country. Communities that were already struggling to survive have now lost their loved ones, their homes, and access to basic services such as healthcare. The earthquake risks plunging entire communities deeper into a humanitarian crisis.
The full extent of the destruction remains unknown. According to reports, there is an acute shortage of clean water, food and medical supplies. Forecasts of unseasonal rain in the next week or so also present an added challenge for rescue and aid efforts.
The Red Cross Is Present in Myanmar, Fighting to Help as Many as Possible
Volunteers from the Myanmar Red Cross have been mobilized, and relief efforts are underway. They are helping to rescue people from the rubble, providing first aid, and distributing emergency relief. Additionally, they are assisting families in reuniting and finding out the fate of missing loved ones.
